- Doctors seeking registration in the General Division or the Trainee Specialist Division may be required to sit the Pre-Registration Examination System (PRES). Passing PLAB Part 2 of the UK General Medical Council exempts a candidate from the PRES, as do certain higher qualifications the Council lists; the Council states it has no arrangement to recognise the PRES in the UK.

Ireland operates a Pre-Registration Examination System, and publishes a list of higher qualifications that exempt a candidate from it. The Council’s pages say the PRES has two parts, Level 2 (clinical knowledge) and Level 3 (clinical skills), covering obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, psychiatry, surgery, and medicine or general practice. Applicants apply online and send documents so the Council can decide which level they are eligible for. A listed higher qualification exempts a doctor only together with a recorded internship or training period, as the Council’s exemptions page sets out.
What this page does not yet carry: the fees, the English-language requirements, how credentials are verified, and the exam dates. The Council’s pages link to these but they have not been read, so those fields stay empty and the page stays marked unverified.
