Practising in India

Registration, renewal, additional qualifications, practising in another state and certificates of good standing — the national rules as published, and each state council's own process.

NMC has issued guidelines on ethical advertising and public communication
On 6 October 2026 the National Medical Commission’s Ethics and Medical Registration Board issued a public notice, framed in view of a writ petition before the Supreme Court of India and the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, informing registered medical practitioners and other stakeholders of Guidelines on Ethical Advertising and Public Communication by Hospitals, Medical Institutions and Registered Medical Practitioners. The notice states that the guidelines come into force with immediate effect. A page compiled from the guidelines has not been written yet; the notice is linked below.

Registration to practise modern medicine in India is run by the state medical councils, inside a national framework set by the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and the Commission’s regulations. The pages below record that national framework from the Gazette text itself, clause by clause, with the date each document was read. What a particular council currently requires — its forms, fees and timelines — belongs on that council’s own page, and those are being compiled next.

Start with how medical registration works if the difference between the State Register, the National Medical Register and the Indian Medical Register is not already clear.
